Accommodation
Hotels in Greenland
With the exception of Ittoqqortoormiit, Kangaatsiaq and Upernavik there are hotels in all towns. Many of the hotels are classified according to the European classification system with up to four **** as the best. The four-star hotels include Hotel Arctic in Ilulissat, Hotel Sisimiut in Sisimiut and Hotel Hans Egede in Nuuk. All hotels have en suite bathroom/toilet, telephone and usually also TV.

The hotels also include the four seamen’s hostels. They were originally used as cheap and basic overnight accommodation primarily for sailors, but in recent years have been modernised and today are of hotel standard. All seamen’s hostels have a cafeteria where you can enjoy the dish of the day or a cup of coffee and a piece of home-made cake. If you stay overnight at a hotel in Greenland, breakfast is always included in the price.

Bed and Breakfast
In the major towns the tourist office can arrange B&B, where you live with a Greenlandic family and thereby get a good insight into everyday life in Greenland. Often, for a small additional charge, you will be able to eat with the family and taste some homemade Greenlandic specialities. In South Greenland several sheep-farmers offer basic overnight accommodation.

Hostels and youth hostels
Cheap alternatives for overnight accommodation are provided by hostels and youth hostels, which are found in most towns. The standard at hostels varies a great deal, but the price often reflects the quality. Some can be compared to ‘hostels’ in Europe, whilst others are more like ‘youth hostels’, in which you will be sleeping with several other people. There are no showers or toilets in the rooms and outside the large towns the toilet can be a simple earth closet. At some hostels the beds are made up, but otherwise you need to bring a sleeping bag.

You do not need a youth hostel card as in Europe in order to stay overnight at hostels and youth hostels, where there are good opportunities to swap experiences with other travellers.

Contact the tourist offices in the areas you are planning to visit and enquire about the possibilities of cheap accommodation.

Camping
If you are travelling to Greenland with a tent, you can pitch it anywhere except in the vicinity of historical ruins and next to lakes and rivers that supply freshwater to towns and settlements. Several towns have established special areas for camping with various facilities. Ask for more information at the local tourist office.
