Qaqortoq is able to offer a mix of culture, history and modern Greenland, as well as icebergs and a fertile landscape that provides a range of hikes to suit all abilities.

Examples of activities

Hvalsey church ruins – a historical site
After just over an hour’s sailing through the fjord with a view of green mountainsides, the ruins of Hvalsey Church will glide into view. The church is the best-preserved building from the Viking period and can be dated back to the 14^th century. Close to the church ruins lies a large farm estate with houses, stables and storehouses, and an account of a wedding here in 1408 is the last written record of the Viking settlers in Greenland.

Granite sculptures and sealskin furs
Throughout Qaqortoq you will be able to see sculptures and decorations carved into the town’s bedrock. The “Stone and Man” project has involved artists from all over Scandinavia on the initiative of Aka Høegh from Qaqortoq, and on a walk round the town you will repeatedly be surprised by more than 20 imaginative and exciting works of art. You can finish your walk with a visit to “Great Greenland”, where sealskins from all over Greenland are tanned, processed and designed into the most beautiful jackets, dresses and accessories.
