Disko Bay’s green town
Qasigiannguit is situated in the south-eastern part of Disko Bay. The name of the town means "the mottled seals" and refers to the good opportunities for hunting seals that have traditionally been in the area. Qasigiannguit’s green hinterland with the rounded mountains, the valleys and the tundra offers good opportunities for activities all year round, including a range of hikes lasting from just a few hours to several days.

Greenland’s oldest house
In Qasigiannguit you will find Greenland’s oldest house, which now houses the town’s museum. The area is a paradise for people interested in archaeology and history who wish to be able to see the remnants of several thousand years of settlement along the coast in the form of ruins of dwellings, meat caches and hunting blinds. Traces have also been found of the highly advanced Saqqaq culture, and items originating from this period are exhibited at the museum.
Excursions
During the winter, dogsleds and snowmobiles dominate the hinterland and the ice-covered sea. Being able to enjoy the snow-covered landscape that passes by whilst sitting on a sled is an unrivalled experience. Snowmobiles complete with a driver can also be hired. During the summer months you can go on fishing trips, seal hunting, shark fishing, botanical expeditions and historical hikes, whilst a number of lakes located in the area means that a canoe trip is yet another activity that can be enjoyed.
Today there are approximately 1,300 people in Qasigiannguit, which is also known as Christianshåb in Danish, and 80 in the municipality’s only settlement, Ikamiut. Fishing and hunting are the primary business activities, and at the town’s fish factory Greenland halibut and crabs are the main products that are processed.
