Ultima Thule – you really can’t get much further north than this. Here you will be able to experience months of midnight sun during the summer and months of polar darkness during the winter. You will also have the chance to get close to the original hunter/gatherer culture where hunting and fishing are the primary basis of existence.
Examples of activities
A trip by dogsled to settlements and hunting grounds
By April the sun is already in the sky 24 hours a day, although there is still lots of ice and snow on the ground. Take a trip on a dogsled and enjoy the chance of being able to see seals, walruses, colonies of birds and musk oxen en route. There are both short trips and trips lasting several days in which you will stay overnight in a tent or a hut. The latter trip could be to the settlement at Siorapaluk, which is the world’s most northerly civilian settlement.
A hike to the Ice Sheet
The town of Qaanaaq is situated close to the Ice Sheet, and after just a couple of hours of relatively easy hiking you can enjoy the sight of the enormous white ice cap and the numerous icebergs in the fjord. In late summer you can also pick and taste the juicy ripe berries growing on the low bushes and shrubs covering the mountainsides.
A culture with deep roots
In the handicraft shop you can look at and buy some of the finest handicraft products made in Greenland, and as everything is crafted by hand, there are of course no two items that are identical. There is also an opportunity to see traditional drum dancing, demonstrations of kayak techniques or listen to choral singing with the singers dressed in national costumes.
