In Ilulissat, North Greenland’s largest town, there are activities to be enjoyed all year round. Whether you are into cultural history, ice or trips by helicopter or ship, you are sure to find something of interest in Ilulissat.
Examples of activities:
Dogsled trips for all
The months of February to April represent the high season for dogsled driving. Experience at first hand the close relationship between the sled driver and the 8-12 dogs pulling the sled whilst enjoying the journey through the snow-covered landscape wrapped up snugly in warm sealskin clothes. Trips range from short 2-hour trips, which are not at all physically demanding, to expedition-like tours where you will have to spend the night in a tent or a hut.
By helicopter to the Ice Sheet
One of the world’s most productive glaciers, Sermeq Kujalleq, is just a 15-minute helicopter flight from Ilulissat. When the helicopter lands close to the Ice Sheet there is an exceptional view of the head of the glacier, where the icebergs are created, and of the enormous expanse of ice. The flight back to Ilulissat takes place at low altitude through the Icefjord, which is densely populated with enormous icebergs. Helicopter trips of various lengths are available.
Sermermiut, one of Greenland’s great historical sites
Within walking distance from the town lies the valley of Sermermiut, which stretches down to Ilulissat Icefjord. This nature conservation area contains traces of the first people who lived in Greenland 4,500 years ago, and the majority of the various cultures that have populated the country since that time also chose to settle here – not because of the fantastic views, but because hunting conditions have traditionally been good.
Between the icebergs and the light of the midnight sun
From the end of May until the end of July the sun is visible in the sky 24 hours a day in Ilulissat. Icebergs towering 100 metres (330 feet) above the surface of the sea are found in huge numbers just outside the town and a sailing trip between them while the low-lying sun lights up the scene with rays of golden light is an experience that is not easily forgotten. Sailing trips between the icebergs can also be combined with a visit to one of the small settlements that are situated in the municipality.
