07.12.05 - The world’s toughest cross-country ski race: Arctic Circle Race

The Arctic Circle Race is a cross-country ski race starting from Sisimiut, which lies north of the Arctic Circle. The race takes place every year and skiers from all over the world compete against each other in the classic cross-country style. In 2008 the race will be held from 1 – 8 April, and there is still time to sign up to take part in the race.

With its 160 kilometres over three days, previous competitors have called the Arctic Circle Race the world’s toughest cross-country race, not least because two nights are spent in tents out in the wilderness between the race days.

The Arctic Circle Race is held near Sisimiut on Greenland’s west coast in the middle of magnificent Greenlandic scenery, where the competitors are surrounded by endless snow landscapes and by the human warmth and helpfulness of the many volunteers and other competitors.

Arctic Circle Race

Good physical fitness, mental toughness and a real spirit of adventure are the most important qualities for competitors once the starting gun has signalled the start of the Arctic Circle Race. At night the skiers sleep in tents in the middle of the Arctic wilderness, whilst during the race itself they are accompanied by dogsleds for safety reasons.

The Arctic Circle Race was created in 1998 and is today one of the highlights of the international sporting calendar for cross-country skiing enthusiasts and nature-lovers. You can read more at www.acr.gl, where you can also sign up to take part in the race with one of the following packages:
