Today the Mother of the Sea was revealed in all its glory. What makes this 7-tonne (15,500-lb) granite figure unique is that it is located out in the water so that it can only be seen in full at low tide.
The source of inspiration for this special statue, which has been sculpted by the artist Christian Rosing, originates from the well-known Greenlandic saga of the Mother of the Sea.

The sculpture, which is 2 metres (6½ feet) high and 1.35 metres (4½ feet) wide, is made of Swedish granite. When the sculptor began work on the figure, the granite stone weighed no less than 8.5 tonnes (18,700 lbs).
It is the Municipality of Nuuk which has donated the statue to the town's citizens and tourists, and according to the municipal authority's website the idea for the statue crystallised after a visit to Germany in which Nuuk's mayor, Agnethe Davidsen, saw a sculpture exhibition in the water where the forces of nature interacted with the sculptures in the same way.
