For generations this former volcanic island has been the playground for these enormous whales. The town’s landmark, which can be seen on the picture below, is also inspired by the whaling period, where whalers from Europe set sail to Greenland to procure animal oil for the industrialised world and lamps throughout Europe.

Fortunately times have changed. Today humpback whales are a protected species, and you have plenty of opportunity to see the whales both offshore and onshore at Disko Island. At the same time, the island is a paradise for hikers, visitors interested in botany and geology and not least those who wish to drive a dogsled during the summer at Lyngmarksbræen, Qeqertarsuaq’s local glacier at a height of 800 metres (2,600 feet).
